Friday, July 19th 2019 - Scoil Fonn & Amhrán na Mumhan
(Workshop only open to Scholarship Winners in the six County Fleadhanna)
In 1982 Comhairle na Mumhan initiated Scoil Fonn & Amhrán in response to the concern being expressed at that time about the quality of air playing, narrow repertoire of singers and musicians, all numbers participating in slow air playing and singing competitions, and the over emphasis on reel and jigs, etc. at sessions and classes to the apparent detriment of our airs. This year in Cork City we have pleasure in continuing the success of Scoil Fonn & Amhrán.
Again we continue with the County and Provincial format. of Scoil Fonn & Amhrán. So as to make the slow air playing and singing workshops more available to participants, each County has been asked to organise (with help from Comhairle na Mumhan) a one day Scoil Fonn & Amhrán prior to Fleadhanna.
These will be followed by the Munster Scoil Fonn & Amhrán – an intensive one day series of workshops on slow air playing, and singing. Scholarships have been extended to include the third prize-winner in the relevant competitions at each Co. Fleadh this year. There is now a greater awareness of the importance of slow airs because of the increased popularity of the S.C.T. traditional music exams.
